Cars, LA Style (+ Car Books, Too)
July 08, 2010
High on the list of All Things LA are cars! During our southern California vacation, Junior loved counting the Bentleys, Maseratis, Rolls Royces, and Lamborghinis. (We were staying near Beverly Hills.) Our Angeleno friends knew the perfect place to take him: the Petersen Automotive Museum of classic cars. Combined with a long stop at the La Brea Tar Pits, a visit to the Petersen made a grand Saturday for our ten-year-old guy.
The third floor of the museum is devoted entirely to exhibits for children, and offers several well-stocked bookshelves, where a kid (or kid and parent) can grab a book and plop down on the floor and read. Some of the car- and vehicle-related picture books available are
Barracca, Debra and Sal. The Adventures of Taxi Dog.
Burton, Virginia Lee. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.
Coy, John. Vroomaloom Zoom.
Crews, Donald. Truck.
d'Aulaire, Ingri and Edgar Parin. The Two Cars.
Eastman, P.D. Go, Dog, Go!
Finchler, Judy, and O'Malley, Kevin. Miss Malarkey's Field Trip.
Floca, Brian. The Racecar Alphabet.
Gifford, Clive. Usborne Big Machines: Racing Cars.
Mahy, Margaret. The Rattlebang Picnic.
Mitton, Tony. Cool Cars.
Peet, Bill. The Caboose Who Got Loose.
Perry, Michael. Daniel's Ride/El Paseo de Daniel.
Scarry, Richard. Richard Scarry's Busy Busy Town.
Shaw, Nancy. Sheep in a Jeep.
Van Dusen, Chris. If I Built a Car.
My son loves the red car in "Toot Toot Zoom" by Phyllis Root. There's even a big crash! My husband would enjoy visiting that car museum.

It's a fun place, Janelle. Thanks for the extra title, too. Several of the children I read with during the school year are car fans, too, and I'm always looking for auto-themed books.
